Trainees hold only a 6-month temporary licence, meaning they may lack the necessary experience or have their licence expire before you complete your course. You can easily check if your driving instructor is a qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the UK by looking at their official DVSA badge displayed in the car.
Green badge: Fully qualified ADI, registered with the DVSA. The badge shows their photo, name, ADI number and the expiry date of their registration.
Pink badge: Trainee instructor (PDI) who is still in the process of qualifying but allowed to give paid lessons under supervision.
By law, instructors giving paid lessons must display their badge clearly in the windscreen while teaching. If you are unsure, you can ask to see their badge, use the DVSA online “find a driving instructor” service, or contact the DVSA with their name and ADI number to confirm their status.
